International Women’s Day

Today is International Women’s Day. To celebrate, and to remember the enormous challenges that women still face around the world, we’d like to share Nuha’s story.

Nuha is a single mother who lives in Sudan, with her baby son, Ghassan. These facts alone make her a remarkable woman because, in Sudan, unmarried mothers and their babies are stigmatised. As a result, many babies are abandoned and condemned to grow-up in loveless orphanages with no one to give them the individual care and attention they need. Nuha wanted a different future for her son but she has had to face imprisonment, death threats from her relatives and a suspended sentence of 100 lashes in order to stay with Ghassan. Hope and Homes for Children in Sudan arranged bail for Nuha and found a place for her and Ghassan at the Mother and Baby Unit we support. Here they could be kept safe until we were able to persuade Nuha’s family to stand by her and her baby. With our help, Nuha has trained as a cook and today she earns her own living, working in a hotel, and is raising her son herself, with the support of her family.
