What is a Small Family Home (sometimes also referred to as a Small Group Home) and why are they necessary?

Generally, this is a place that provides a safe, family-type environment for the short, medium or long-term care of children, depending on the individual needs and best interests, of a maximum of 12 children and young adults who cannot be reunited with their families or placed in foster care. Often, these are children with disabilities or special needs.  Small Family Homes provide opportunities for children to be integrated into the community and to experience care that is much closer to family life.
