Last week was a milestone for Hope and Homes for Children’s Kenya team, who took a major step forward in supporting care reform efforts in Nakuru County.
Over two days, the team collaborated with Nakuru County officials and representatives from all 11 sub-counties, diving deep into care reform.
Together with the other attendees, our team explored the Kenyan National Care Reform Strategy, transition guidelines for orphanages, and studied powerful examples of reform from Kenya and beyond.
With an impressive 100% attendance and key sessions led by the National Council for Children’s Service (NCCS) and the County Children Coordinator, we achieved something incredible – every single sub-county has now committed to developing its own care reform strategy in alignment with national policies.
And of course, Hope and Homes for Children will be right there, supporting them every step of the way.

A massive step forward
Nakuru’s transformation began in Gilgil, a sub-county there. Our team spent valuable time with the Children’s Advisory Committee, strengthening partnerships, raising awareness, and identifying opportunities to reinforce and strengthen community-driven solutions that keep families together.
We also engaged directly with 15 out of 23 orphanages in Gilgil, all of whom reaffirmed their commitment to transitioning to family and community services – a massive step forward!

Thank you’s
We’d like to give a huge shoutout to Grace and Mirriam for their flawless organisation, and to Stephen for his wisdom in shaping the agenda.
Also, thank you to to NCCS and the Directorate of Children’s Services for their leadership and determination to proactively develop plans to achieve the ambition of transitioning all orphanages by 2032 as per the National Care Reform Strategy.
This is just the beginning of something truly transformative for children and families in Nakuru!
