Across Africa, HIV/AIDS and war have decimated entire communities, leaving many children living alone and facing a bleak future. Even families supported by an adult are vulnerable and struggle to cope when faced with illness or poverty.
Our ACTIVE Family Support Model is a radically different way of supporting children in extreme circumstances, enabling them to experience a fulfilling family life and be fully integrated into their communities. Research has shown that ‘one size fits all’ is not a successful approach to international development. Instead, we tailor our support to cater for individual needs in five integrated areas – living conditions, family and social relationships, education, physical and mental health and household economy.
Additionally, as part of our work, we have created the tools to enable us to target those in greatest need, accurately assess their circumstances and support them in the most effective way.
Importantly, we do not work in isolation; children, families and communities are proactive partners. This enables them to have control over their future and help create solutions that lead to self-sufficiency.
