Claudette is 14 and is the head of a household caring for her younger brother Francois who is 8. They lost both their parents to AIDS. When we first came across them they were living in awful conditions - their shelter was falling down around them and they barely had enough food to survive. This is Claudette's story in her own words: "Before
we met Hope and Homes for Children we were living in very bad conditions.
We were street children, forced to beg and often went hungry. We stopped
going to school, as it is impossible to study when you are so hungry.
We were isolated from our neighbours as we had the stigma of being AIDS
orphans. I wanted to get a job but it was not possible because of that
stigma" |
