Claudette is 14 and is the head of a household caring for her younger brother Francois who is 8. They lost both their parents to AIDS. When we first came across them they were living in awful conditions - their shelter was falling down around them and they barely had enough food to survive. This is Claudette's story in her own words:

"Before we met Hope and Homes for Children we were living in very bad conditions. We were street children, forced to beg and often went hungry. We stopped going to school, as it is impossible to study when you are so hungry. We were isolated from our neighbours as we had the stigma of being AIDS orphans. I wanted to get a job but it was not possible because of that stigma"

"Hope and Homes for Children has given us hope for the future. Now we wash ourselves and wear good clothes - they brought me my very first pair of shoes. Today our lives do not focus on food because we now have enough. The most important thing they did for us was to give us a new home - our last shelter was the worst I have ever seen.

We were also very proud to return to school and become like other children again. We have all we need for daily life like food, clothes, medication, love and shelter...

We even have two goats which we rear after school and some crops on our land from the seeds and labour paid for by Hope and Homes for Children. We are now healthy, smart and hopeful.

Before, life didn't have any sense for us. Now we have self esteem and have respect in our village. We don't tell people that we are orphans anymore as Hope and Homes for Children is our family."
