In the last 50 years studies have shown the devastating physical, psychological and social effects of orphanages. This has led to the UN declaring, "alternative care for young children, especially those under the age of three, should be provided in family-based settings." Despite this, many governments are yet to embrace modern childcare alternatives, such as fostering and adoption, instead funding traditional orphanages - or childrens institutions, as they are more commonly known.

When we began work in Romania in 1999 there were 100,000 children trapped in institutional care. Today the figure is less than 11,000 and the Romanian Government has committed to working with us to close every state run institution by 2020.
