Kosovo became a province of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia after the 2nd World War. Violence erupted in 1998 following the earlier breakdown of the Republic. The Kosovo Liberation Army came out in open rebellion against Serbian rule. Although the conflict lasted only 78 days, it left thousands of people dead, and displaced over 500,000.

The country is still recovering from the impact of the conflict. Even now families continue to live in damaged or partially reconstructed homes and many schools are in a state of disrepair.

We have established the only residential family homes for children in need of protection in Kosovo, one in Pristina and the other in Prizren.

The homes provide temporary accommodation for vulnerable children regardless of ethnic background, religion or place of birth. We are often the last or only hope for children who have spent most of their lives living in fear of abuse.

The aim of both our homes is to reunite children with their immediate or extended families. If this is not possible we find caring foster or adoptive parents.

The UN has used the management systems in place in our homes as examples of good practice for other service providers. We are therefore setting the standards in which future child care services will be measured and required to operate.
