Hadrian’s Wall Trekathon

Saturday 23 June 2012, Scotland

Hadrian’s Wall originally ran from coast to coast and spanned 72 miles. Today we are left with only sections of this famous landmark, which cuts through the Northumberland National Park. Starting in Carlisle we trek for 26 miles (42km) alongside the wall, admiring ancient monuments and beautiful scenery of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This is a challenging day-walk which will give us a great sense of achievement as we finish in Housesteads.

Guide itinerary:

We meet in the border town of Carlisle for an early start and head towards the first of our checkpoints - The Roman Fort of Birdoswald (8 miles). Our next checkpoint is at Carvoran, the site of a Roman Army Museum. It is at this point we walk along the most visible sections of the Wall, which runs along spectacular cliff tops and through stunning countryside.

Notable landmarks in the next section of the walk include Sycamore Gap, with the stand alone tree featured in the Robin Hood Film with Kevin Costner. Leaving ‘the Tree’ behind us we head towards Crag Lough a magnificent escarpment which the Roman’s made good use of.

Our destination is just a checkpoint away now as we head to the impressive Housestead Roman Ruins, where we can rest our weary limbs and congratulate ourselves on our fine achievement.
